Wry Neck or Something Else??

Hi, hoping someone can please help me out. This chicken was fine 2 days ago. Now this is how she is 24/7. Voracious appetite and drinking well (with assistance). Pooping. Preening. Chatting a little.

What I've done so far....
A. 2mls of Baytril 5%, once per day.
B. Mashed boiled whole egg, mixed with greens, vitamin powder and vitamin/electrolyte water. Also eating grower food.
C. Blackmores Multi B tablets given last night (2 tablets).
D. Vitamin e with selenium water given yesterday.

Anything else I can try?

Does this look like classic wry neck? I know Mareks is always a possibility...but I'm hoping, not, in this case.

Thanks

Hi Angela, I'm sorry about your pullet.

It does look neurological. I would still check inside her ear to make sure there's no infection. Also it's likely the angle of her head, but does she have any pus in her eye?

If possible - direct dose her with the Vitamin E (400IU) daily - just pop the capsule into her beak. What's in your vitamin/electrolyte powders? You don't want to overdo vitamins - general Wry Neck treatment is Vitamin E and B-Vitamins (needs to have B1 Thiamine). The egg you are giving has sufficient Selenium for the uptake of E.

Wry Neck is a symptom - it can be from Marek's like you mentioned, some other conditions it's seen with are vitamin deficiency, injury and genetics.

If there is no infection, then antibiotics won't help. Are you sure about your dosage of 2ml of Baytril - maybe you left out a decimal?

It seems like you are doing what you can - hopefully the vitamins will start helping her.

Hi. Thanks for that.

I don't think that's pus in her eye. I think she's a poorly bred Australorp. Her eyes seem to have always been like this. Her third eyelid is partly across? (Cant think of the proper name for this for chickens at the moment). Even so...I'll check out her eyes in the morning, just to be sure.

Tonight I've cleaned her ears out with hydrogen peroxide, then applied some ear drops for mites just in case that's the problem. She has been scratching her ears quite a bit, particularly on the side she's holding down....hmmmm.

Baytril...I could well be wrong in my dosage! Please correct me.

I'll have to check out what's in my vitamin/electrolyte powder tomorrow. I'll report that info here.

Thanks for the tip about the egg containing enough selenium to go with the vit e.

Tonight I've given her 1/3 tablet of baby aspirin. Hopefully that'll help too.
Again, thanks for your response. Really appreciated! :thumbsup

I agree with @Wyorp Rock that it looks like neurological symptoms that might indicate something wrong with the brain or Mareks. Many diseases can cause brain inflammation, and there are also seizures seen in some chickens.

I would give 400 IU of vitamin E daily, plus some form of thiamine—either in your poultry vitamin, or 1/2 of one of the Blackmore B complex tablets daily. I would probably finish out 5 days of the Baytril, but I don’t know the dosage of 5% baytril. When using 10% Baytril, the dosage is 0.05ml per pound twice a day (0.25 ml for a 5 pound chicken) for 5 days.

Thanks...that's really helpful.

I'd like to know...vitamin e gel-capsules, can I just pop one down her throat? I know how to do this safely. This would be a far more convenient option rather than poking a hole in the end and dropping into her beak or food.
Yes, you can just give her the gel cap.
How is she doing?

Thanks so much for your replies :)

I'm pleased to say she just "may" be getting better. It's very early days yet....but I think the treatment I'm giving her might be doing some good. She's eating by herself, although I do have to sometime hold the bowl up for her and nudge her to eat. But, once she gets started she's a little piggy! She'll eat like this for perhaps 30 seconds then seems to fall asleep or just go blank. Then, with nudging by me, she's off again.

Here's how I'm treating her:
1. 0 75 mls vitamin B injected 2x per day.
2. 1 x 400 iu vitamin e (natural, not synthetic) gel capsule per day.
3. Catasol (Bayer) multi vitamin in drinking water daily. Also added to food below.
4. Chick grower, spinach, broccoli, BOSS, linseed, dash of olive oil and mashed boiled eggs.

I may increase the vitamin e to two capsules per day, 800 iu per day. But I'll wait till the first week is up and see how I feel she's doing.

:)
