Hi my silkie has wry neck and I was wondering if it would hurt to loosely put an ace bandage around her neck while I'm treating her? This is killing me and I hate to see her like this! Would a bandage help her hold her neck in place or would it hurt her? I bought an ace wrap but wanted your opinions before I used it. She's on her vitamins polyvisol without iron and vitamin E and I'm looking to get some predisolone if I can. What do you think? Wrap it or leave it alone.? She is a bit better than this morning. she had her head all the way under her doing flips but now she's been somewhat holding it up with a bow still in the neck of course. I don't know I love her so much I just want to do everything I can possibly do!

Hi , I sent you a pm :)
I wouldn't wrap it. I propped my girls head up with a rolled towel under neath her . But I had the towel wrapped right around the outside of her body because she couldn't sit without rolling over... I also massaged her neck at each feed..
Just feed her as much as you can and stay with the vitamins. Oh gave you got selenium tablets? You need this to help her absorb the vitamin e.. I got mine from a chemist. In the vitamin isle....
1 selenium tablet every 2 nd feed for first 2 days then selenium only every 2nd day. You can give too much so be careful with that...
Let me know how you go.
Good luck
Debbie

I just had two hatch with neck issues and I was thinking about some sort of brace, like cutting a straw or the like...hmmm

I wouldn't mess with a brace, by forcing the neck you may cause more problems. Wry neck is a symptom of vitamin deficiency, so treat the symptoms by administering polyvisol without iron and some vitamin E, best to keep her separated to avoid further injury. Good idea to have chicks -saver on hand.

OK. I have the selenium tabs and the polyvisol and the vitamin E. I gt the selenium tabs instruction, but how much vits? E? My dog just attacked my silkie and killed her, she was only 3 weeks old and I had to give her special care (I kept her in my bra for warmth) so I am not above special care...and I will be really bummed to lose another baby...

Hi!
I hope this response is not coming too late.
I work in wild bird rescue and focus on chickens in Hawaii. I work closely with avian vets.
Contrary to popular belief, wry neck is not a result of vitamin E and Selenium deficiency. If it’s the result of a vitamin deficiency, it’s B12 deficiency.
I believe the reason it’s been widely believed outside of the veterinary profession to be E and Selenium, is because deficiency in those can lead to brain damage causing neurological symptoms, such as ataxia, which includes circling and stargazing. However, wry neck is not a neurological condition. It’s neuromuscular. These disorders also include dyskinesia and bradykinesia as seen in Parkinson’s disease.
B12 is not a vitamin that is likely to be deficient in diet. More often than not, b12 deficiency is the result of intestinal parasites.

But trauma can also cause wry neck and other neuromuscular disorders.

Selenium is not something that should be supplemented outside of a vitamin complex/ multivitamin, like poultry booster or VitMinPro. At the right levels, it can cause toxicity, and at comparatively low levels it will affect egg production and offspring.

Vitamins B12 and E., however, are safe at high levels
I highly recommend using a product called “kickin chicken” which is an oil based food additive high in both. Also use poultry booster, and get a fecal float done as soon as possible. If there are parasites going untreated, the bird won’t be able to uptake the b12 and recover.
If you noticed her “shed her intestinal lining” prior to the wry neck starting, that’s a good indicator that parasites are present.

Good luck!
