Hello, I could really use some advice. I have a senior hen (8ish years old) who started isolating herself from the flock a few days ago. She seemed lethargic but was still foraging, eating, drinking, putting herself up at night. I decided to bring her in and isolate her because she seemed off. Offered vitamins added to water + bowl of regular water, and her food. She’s now doing this (video won’t attach. I’ve included a pic. She is twisting her neck down. It’s like she has moments of clarity and then starts twisting again). I’m at a loss, could this just be a vitamin deficiency even though she’s on the same diet as the other birds who are clinically normal? I’m concerned about avian influenza or mareks disease or possibly a brain tumor? Does she have a chance?

I’ve never had a chicken with wry neck but I would look her over for any wounds , swelling or bruises on her neck.
Here’s a link for wry neck treatment, you might want to start treatment if you can’t find an injury. It wouldn’t hurt her and someone with experience with wry neck will hopefully give some insight soon

For video, upload to Youtube and provide a link or you can upload to the BYC Gallery and let us know where it is.

Can you look in her ears for any infection or mites? Just to be sure they are not the cause of the neck twisting?

I'd treat as Wry Neck which is a neurological symptom. Give her 400IU Vitamin E and 1/4tablet B-Complex daily along with a little egg. You can find the vitamins in stores like Walmart, CVS, etc.

With her age, its hard to know what all may be going on. As hens age, many things can affect them, so I'd treat the symptoms that you see for now.

((( sending lots of hope and best wishes. We had something like this that was awful for all... lots of warm good luck beaming to you ))). I feel like Wyorp and others on here are very knowledgeable; I have no wisdom to add just sympathy....
