Hi everyone. I'm looking to add 2 or 3 more hens. I have 2 chickens now and they are 3 going on 4 years old. I thought adding either Jersey Giants or Plymouth Rock would be a plus due to how easy going they are. I thought I should get a older hen, (4 or 5 months or even older) would be better than chicks. I know their will be a pecking order that needs to be established. Does anybody have any advice? I would welcome any advice. Thanks
You will most likely have more luck, if you include more information on your location. If you are in PA/OH I have a Jersey hen for-sale, and may part with a Barred rock.
And I agree, getting an older bird 4-5 months and up should make life easier when it comes to the pecking order. Much younger then that and you will most likely need a different housing situation. I know my Barred Rocks can be little devils when it comes to young motherless chicks.
I live in NJ only 35 min. from Pa. I could do a road trip if not to far, but couldn't do anything until the spring. Glade to hear I am on the right track with getting older hens.
Thanks
My mother says you are about 6hr away, so hopefully you can find someone closer. Have you tried Craigslist, that is a good place to check for chickens nearby. But, if you do feel like making a rather large road trip down to Pittsburgh, I will be parting with my barred rocks in the spring (2yrs).
I have blue/black and splash eggs for sale if you are interested. I have had great hatch rates with them. Let me know if you are interested. Can provide pics if needed
