WTH is wrong with TSC? Chick purchasing nightmare.

I live in E TX and I got my chicks and ducks from my local TSC. They let me handle and choose my own and they had them just in the standard troughs they use no gates no locks. But they also sell out within an hr (so there isn't any animals for the kids to handle) so I was there and made sure I was first in line! I did have to sign the form with my address etc, but I asked what it was for and they said it was to track how many chicks are being sold and when and that the addresses would not be used. The people at my TSC are nice polite people who actually have experience dealing with the animals/supplies they sell so I guess I'm pretty fortunate.

Our TSC in Kentucky was the same this week with having gates around the birds. Really it is not a bad idea with the way some parents watch/or not their children. However if you are an adult I would hope I could pick my own out. Oh it was much easier to pass on buying them since I couldn't pick any up

Ours did the same thing, but the still let us handle them and pick them out

Here in Maryland they didn't have us do any of that. We picked out our own, the guy just handed us the boxes and was like go for it. Granted we cleaned them out of Golden laced Wyandottes and took seven Cornish Rocks for meaties. The poor people who came in after us got nothing.

Didn't have to go through any of that with our chicks at TSC. However, I did notice that after a few weeks, they put a big fence around the chicks and ducklings. I also noticed a few weeks before, a kid about 6 or 7 years old with no parents around poking his hands around inside the chick and duck pens. I did tell him to keep his hands out of there since he didn't look like he knew what he was doing with them, other than messing with 'em. Can't say for sure from one store to the next, but having worked in retail, I do know that kids are a problem when it comes to merchandise.

I should also say, they did have them labeled wrong. They had them labeled as New Hampshire Reds, turned out to be Golden Laced Wyandottes. So gotta watch out for that too.

I asked my local TSC what was up with the gates. They said that it came down from Corp. but she wasn’t sure of the reason. She did tell me that they had a 4yo climb into the ben and kill 18 chicks by sitting on them. If they know you or feel that you know what you are doing they will allow you to pick your own chicks.

Oh good, I thought it was me that caused it

I was trying to pick out a rabbit for my twins and I picked up the cutest one and that little booger bit me! Of course I yelped.

Why are they having people sign a book ? I always look at the chicks when I go in the feed store. But I got plenty of my own I have hatched but can never pass looking at cute fuzzy butts. I do not think I have ever seen anyone sign book when buying chicks. At least out here.

Yeah, I thought signing the book was a little weird.

But I was able to come up with a real creative name and a cool-sounding hometown, so it made signing the book more fun.

I got my chicks the first week TSC had them. At that time he let me pick out my own 6 and yes everything in the book too for me. Then about two weeks later they put the gates up around the pens and I couldnt save a chick being pecked so had to go get a store employee to help me.

When I was there the first time there were kids picking them up and holding them. Its easy for them to put them in the wrong pen or to drop them so I'm glad for the fencing but its hard for adults who love and respect the breeds. If we are buying them we should get to pick them. I havent tried to buy them since the placements of the gate. The book did help me get the poor injured one because she couldnt find the injured chick list to "give" it to me so I just had her add one more to my book number. They are lying when they say its state law. Its probably corporate getting a mailing list together to bug us to buy more chicks or to see how many are being sold to what state or something stupid like that. If it was law I wouldnt have been able to walk away without signing or them counting my chicks at Smith's Farm Store!
