Ok, I was on my way to work this morning, and beside a very busy two-lane state road, were 5 or 6 "stray" chickens. A few hens and a couple roo's. The reason I think these are strays is because they were about 50 yards from a livestock auction barn the morning after the weekly auction. There are no houses in the immediate vicinity and I've never seen loose chickens. I'm fairly aware of all the local flocks along that road.

So, I'm guessing they got loose last night or were dumped after they didn't sell.

Would you try to catch them and keep them?

I highly doubt they're still there, but looking out for stray chickens is like looking out for stray kittens to me. I just CAN'T leave them to fend for themselves.

I don't have any chickens currently at home (they're all at bf's) so I wouldn't have to worry about intermingling. I SO want to go find those poor homeless chickens. Lol.

If you really think they're strays, go get em. Maybe call the livestock auction folks and try to do some farmer a good deed returning their escapee chickens first.

I'd beware of diseases/ problems. They might've gotten dumped for a reason. Although if you're isolating them for a while that may not be such a big deal. Not that you shouldn't help em if they're sick- you just might need to commit to treating certain things for a while.

I have no trouble sticking my nose into such things because they're domestic animals(and I am not a dog lover but would sure help a dog). if they're still hanging around I would try to coax/snare them. quarantine is an excellent idea. good luck.
