Hi there,

I recently got a blue laced wyandotte pullet. I am very unfamiliar with the breed and also with what to look for in lacing patterns. I would like to breed her, but I'd first like to know what breeders think of her strengths and weaknesses, and what I should try to improve on her.

This appears to be a splash laced red Wyandotte to me, not blue laced red.

I think she has good body conformation. She should weigh around 6 and 1/2 pounds as a hen, so that is one thing to look at. Her feathers look to have the right amount of fluffiness to me.

Color wise, there are a couple of imperfections. The lacing is good, but the feathers show shafting, which is that lighter colored stripe down the center (or shaft) of the feathers than the surrounding red color.

The other problem is she has a bit too much gold on the head and upper neck, and not enough red lacing on the lower neck.

All in all I think she is very good.

For a male, body conformation and size are most important. Color wise, you could use a red laced black or red laced blue. Look for good striping in the hackle, and no solid areas there of red/gold.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for this incredibly helpful feedback. I will be saving this and referring back to it as I learn!
