Wyandotte question...

6 of the chicks that I bought were GLW. They are 2 1/2 weeks old now. 5 of them don't have a comb, just a pretty wide flat skin area on the top of their heads with just a hint of the waddles. One of them has a comb...but not a comb that looks like the ones in the pics I have seen of Wyandottes. This one's comb looks just like the combs my BO's & Barred Rocks have. I am a little confused....could it be mixed somehow? Do you think this is a Roo? They came from healthy chicks & more. This one also feathered out much quicker than the rest.

The way it was explained to me is that Wyandottes are a breed that were created by combining several different breeds, some of which have different combs, and occasionally they can have combs of varying shapes, and occasionally no comb at all, though for the standard of perfection they are suppose to have rose comb. I have 4 SLW hens, and all 4 have a comb that is different from the next. They all have rose combs, but still all look different. One of the girls took forever to develop her comb while another was the first to develop a comb, and her's came in so fast that we thought she was a he for awhile! Your babies are still very young. You have to give them some time. It seems like Wyandottes take a little longer to grow theirs in right.

Thanks! That makes me feel a little better...it was kind of confusing seing that. Also another one that I have has all gold feathers across the shoulders& looks kind of different from the rest, but no comb like the others. I have noticed that overall they are developing a little slower than the others.

look at some pics here for comparison. wyandottes do have straight combs too occasionally, but posting pics is always good. this is a great place for it.

It's true. I have 10 Wyandottes and two have the traditional looking comb.

I have two GLW from Mt. Healthy (not sure if this is the same as healthy chicks and more) but I posted the same question and got the same answer. One of mine has a single comb and the other has a rose comb. I thought something was wrong with the "squished comb" at first! LOL

The correct type of comb for a wyandotte is a rose comb which starts out as you described as a flat area. Single combs do pop up occasionally, especially in hatchery birds, but that isn't what the standard calls for.
