my chicken is 9 months old and is still not laying. What gives?

When it gets cold out my flock slows down tremendously in laying eggs. Or it could be she's been laying in a hidden spot where nobody looks (my hens seem to do this every day in the oddest of places!) does she have a nesting box to lay in? If there is a place where a predator could get to her at night something could be stealing the eggs. You can put a plastic or store bought egg in with her and see if it's there in the morning to determine a predator.

Make sure on a good complete feed, poultry grit free choice, and OS free choice. Treats 10% or less of diet. Should come along. Make sure eggs of some sort in nesting box to encourage laying. Agreed make sure housed in coop/run area so not laying some place else. Increasing daylight hours and maturity will set bird into lay. The age is different for every bird. However when a bird does go into lay later it tends to have less problems later since more mature.

Here is an article to check out as to reasons to cover your bases. Wyandotte’s tend to be larger and go into lay later when arrive at maturity and breed weight. Winter and decreased daylight hours may compound that and make it later. Hang in there!
