Hey everyone. Going to post flock related stuff here as they grow and I learn. First time having chickens since I was young.

They are all just about 4 weeks old.

1 Rhode island red and 3 New Hampshire reds.
This morning they learned how to fly/flutter out of the 2ft high run.

I was headed to the store for more wire to enclose their run this afternoon so it was good timing.

For now they will have a 5x5x5 pvc run that Ill move around the yard. Im building their coop in June.

I have! The welcome was awesome. I figured I'd like a home to sort of keep track of progress on things. I'm not sure if there is a better place for that or not, I saw other similar type "flock threads" here.

Girls are getting big, phase 1 of coop is completed.

Next weekend I'm adding a clean out door and then the nesting boxes.

After that I'm adding a vapor barrier and siding and a sloped roof.

Side note, any way to tell if any of these are roosters at this age?

Well, I did some looking and it appears that 2/4 are roosters. Its funny how it worked out. Each of my 4 kids claimed a chick originally and its the 2 boys' chickens that are the roosters.

I've informed them of the sad(but delicious) news that Rex and Enchilada are going to have to be eaten once they start crowing as city ordnance prohibits roosters.

We will have Rex Tacos and Enchilada Enchiladas per their request.

Update, since its been so long, sorry! Life gets busy with 4 kids in addition to the chickens!

I've moved the coop to a better spot in the yard than right as you walk outside, my wife appreciates it.



We sent two of the cockerels to a family member who needed roosters for his flock and we harvested one more, it was my first time to do that and its definitely not my favorite thing, but it went well and I spent a lot of time making sure Rex was calm and basically asleep before doing the deed. I don't see myself doing meat birds any time soon.

I had picked up 2 more banded chicks a couple months after getting the initial 4(once it started looking like some might be cockerels) so we have 1 laying hen as of a week ago and the other two that will start laying late December. My mom is hatching eggs in her classroom so I'll be receiving a number of new chicken from that as well.

Rose our RIR that is now laying has become super friendly with me, if I'm outside she runs to me and does tippy taps waiting for me to pet her and then nuzzles my legs like a cat. Today she decided she would, without warning, try to fly onto my shoulder at 400mph, that was quite the moment. I think I'm becoming a redneck Disney princess, despite my beard.



I guess a lot more than I realized has changed! I built a sturdier run for the early stages of new hens so they can get accustomed to the main flock easier, it is not currently attached to the coop. All of the flock comes and goes as they want. This next spring I plan to add a few more and I'll use the run for them once they leave the brooder.

Things I still need to do:

Raise the coop off the ground.

Add a connecting piece to the run so that I can allow coop access to the run and close up the coop, in case I'm out of town I'd prefer them to be a bit safer. With less chance of flying into a neighbor's yard or something.

Add vapor barrier and siding and a proper sloped metal(or shingled) roof before it starts raining too much.

Fix the door.
