im sure this has been done but I am curious how it works. If I had a flock of leghorns and other laying breeds and I introduced a couple Sumatra hens and allowed them to breed with a leghorn rooster, and continued to breed them into the flock, would I destroy my egg production rate or could I produce a laying flock with Sumatra instincts and athleticism? Also I would be looking to tone down the broodiness a bit.

Sumatra: "Hens are poor layers with yearly totals of eggs amounting to about 100 white eggs a year, and are exceptionally susceptible to broodiness"

In a study the performance of the F1 cross of Schijndelaar rooster(composite breed with Sumatra parentage with average of 140 eggs per year) with a production type white leghorn(average of 320 eggs per year at 72 weeks of age) the F1 crossed produced about 270 eggs at 72 weeks of age)

As for Broodiness, it has been implied many times and it has been my experience that it's sex linked in nature so the L/Sumatra cross will be non-broody.

So here is my take, the F1 cross of Leghorn/Sumatra will be very good layers but stay with the F1 pullets, cull the F1 cockerels from the flock as they will hinder any type of production when cross back to Sumatra.

Thank you. That’s a lot of good information.
