I keep seeing all these coops made of recycled material or built from scraps. I really want to do this and am frustrated by my lack of ability. :gig

We are going to build within the next year so I have to learn. DH can build anything...just doesn't have the time or inclination after work. I really want to do it myself though.

If you want to learn , go for it. There may be woodworking classes at your local community college, check it out. Also check you tube for videos. Good luck.

I think I am going to try. I have plenty of time and can collect materials slowly to save money.
Check craigslist for free stuff, and many places give away pallets. I got some plywood from shipping boxes to make this: 20180428_134438.jpg
I paid for 3, 2x4x8 pieces of lumber at our local saw mill, about half the price of Lowes! They are rougher and a little bit thinner and wide, but i don't care. I bought hardware cloth for the bottom and screws, and the rest is salvaged material. Oh and the paint was $9 a gallon, "oops" or mistint, so about 1/3 the cost of custom mixed.

Our HOA requires that our coop be preapproved, so I have to follow whatever plans I turn in to them and specify what materials I will use. I also have to paint it to match the house.

Otherwise, I would be all over getting free stuff and cheap lumber. I saw a free 8 x 10 nice shed on craigslist today and wished we didn't have to do the preapproval process.

You can still collect free materials and draw up plans according to what you get!
