Yankee Fall Classic Poultry Show at the NYS Fairgrounds

Concerning the Marans...

For breeders, we have 9 cuckoo Marans hens, and 1 silver cuckoo Marans rooster. Out of the chicks we hatched this year from the darkest eggs, there was one silver (a cockerel), some black (pullets), some cuckoo (pullets and maybe a cockerel) and a couple other varieties that I'm not sure what they'll end up as. As I said, the hens are all cuckoo, but the roo must have some other genes working because of all the other varieties we ended up with.

I know for sure that I'd like to sell the silver rooster, some cuckoo pullets, and a couple of the blacks. I'll have to take a head count and see how many there still are out there. I'll try to post picture of the hens and the rooster. I'll get some pics of the Marans I have to sell, and post those this week. If anyone is interested, I might have some hatching eggs available.

They are laying dark eggs, averaging a consistent 4-6 (higher earlier in the year) on the egg scale, with stippling and spotting on most of the eggs.

Like I said, I'll try to post a pic of the hens and roo, and get some on of the chicks.
Thanks!

Ok, let's see if this works... trying to post a picture:D

Is anyone taking any cochins, silkies, or d'uccles to the show to swap or sell? I am looking to add to my flock. I took a head count on the Marans, and I have a pair of cuckoos if anyone is interested. They are this years hatch from dark eggs. The pullet should start laying next month, and the cockerel is crowing. Let me know! Hope to see some of you there!

We went down to the show in Syracuse yesterday (Saturday) just to watch and to see what there was for sale. Well, I came home with a trio of really nice grey silkies! I always said I wouldn't have grey silkies because they just don't seem to be very popular. When I saw them, I just couldn't resist! I purchase a young cockerel and two pullets from a really nice girl from Ohio. I'll post some pics later...after I find my camera...I am always loosing that

Anyways, she purchased her breeders from Rainbow Silkies. Thanks, Lauren, for the great silkies!

There were some gunieas I had to walk away from:) I am a sucker for guineas, especially in lavender, blue, purple, etc. I just got down to only three for the winter, and had to seriously tell myself "NO MORE GUINEAS...at least for now".

The guys from eggcartons.com were there with their goodies. Real nice people. I will definitely be dealing with these guys. They were giving out egg-shaped stress balls. I can't wait to see the look on my students' faces when I show them! This morning, my son Owen looked in the incubator (Thanks Mel from Flufnstuff for the eggs!) and wanted to know if the stress ball was in there! He thought they were giving out hatching eggs!

Anyways, some of the guys from the Northern New York Poultry Fanciers were there. It is always good to chat with these guys. I wish I could have stayed longer, but we had to get going. Plus, I had my trio in the car, and "chickens + SAAB = me in trouble" ... they were stating to stink the thing up...I gotta replace my Jeep so I don't have to take my car to the shows.

Well, it seemed to be a well-attended show. Not sure on the numbers, but there was a variety of breeds. I'm glad I got to see some giant dewlap toulouse in person. Those things are MONSTEROUS!!

Anyone else go to the show? Did you show, watch, or buy?
I would love to hear from other New Yorkers...
