Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex suburbanite here. I have a fairly large portion of my backyard (well, large by suburban standards at ~1,400 sq ft) that I have sectioned off as a vegetable garden and "other practical stuff" area. I've long contemplated the keeping of a pair of laying hens along a section of fence that shades a part of that area, thus making it unsuitable for growing things, and recent events have made that seem like more of a good idea. I could devote as much as a 35'x5' rectangular area along this fence to a coop and run, which I'm hoping would be more than sufficient for the 2 hens that I'm allowed to keep per city ordinance. So, as to the intro template...
  1. I'm a complete and utter noob, and have no chickens yet.
  2. 0
  3. n/a
  4. I'll let you know after I've kept a few.
  5. Too many hobbies to list, but they include hunting, fishing, cooking, veggie gardening, etc.
  6. I'm a husband, as well as a father to a grown daughter and grown son, and grandfather to the world's smartest granddaughter (hey, I'm allowed to take some license when bragging). We have two dogs (a chow/golden retriever mix and another golden mix, but mixed with what...we have no idea). I'm a software engineer.
  7. I found BYC via a Google search on....surprise, surprise...."backyard chickens" about an hour ago.
Here's looking forward to gathering more useful information than I know what to do with.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
That's a nice sized area for 2 hens. The ordinance seriously only allows for 2? Three should be the minimum. If one dies, the other will be left alone which is never good with chickens.
