From making so many things, I had so much leftover yarn, so I decided to make a couple little blankets for my dogs bed...


Besides the fact that I was using up old yarn, I especially loved the rustic, natural nature of these blankets. I loved that the thicker yarn bunched up, and I loved the ruffling of the borders. Since I had more yarn left, I decided to make a bigger blanket for myself...


If you notice, this time I did thinner rows. I used all different colors that I would have usually never thought to put together, but here, everything goes. I made a thicker border to camouflauge the edge uneveness and then added the shell border. Again, the bunchiness of the thicker yarns really adds a homespun appeal to this.

Since I had even more yarn leftover, I started another blanket...


This one has even more weird color combinations. The only thing you have to watch out for is making sure the sides stay even. Since you use very thick yarns and very thin yarns, the rows can easily start to come in or go out. To compensate, I will have to increase or decrease occasionally to keep them straight. Other than that, these are really fun to make as you change colors constantly, put colors together that you never thought you'd use, switch from thick yarns to thin yarns, you see your leftover yarns being put to a good use and you get this really original looking blanket.

I have so much yarn I cannot even count all the skeins and ongoing projects. Working in a "health and rehab facility" I am well aware of how needed crochet and knit afghans and shawls are. I would guess I've made a dozen or more just to give away. I do so knowing they are unlikely to last more than a couple of years.

What I have been doing lately is crocheting six or seven granny squares (about six inches each). I sew them together and then I use tunsanian (afghan) stitch across the long side for a few rows. After that I may switch to regular knitting for the rest or regular crochet. It is just a difference in how the switch is made. I really like the variety of textures. Some of the color combinations can be strange when I'm using bits and pieces. I just choose a color I can find easily like navy blue and periodically stitch a few rows in that color. That helps the other colors seem a little less disorganized.

Another way I use up odds and ends of yarn is to knit or crochet hats. Various charity projects get some, others go to residents where I work, still others go to the nursery at the hospital. Sometimes I make small ones from doll patterns for the preemies at the Children's Hospital.

All of these depend on what the needs and supplies are at the moment.

Maybe in a few weeks I'll get one of those crochet variety afghans finished and can get a photo to post.
