YAY - 1st egg today - and questions -**** PIC ADDED****

They will lay eggs every day. Just keep eating the eggs until she decides to go broody (its a hormonal thing....you cannot make them go broody...it will happen when it happens) and then when she is, just stop collecting them.

I got my first egg last week, and it had a fertile spot in it, and my ducks do not have any water to mate in. I don't like them by their selves, so I scramble them with chickens eggs. can't tell the difference!

Well I went out this morning and have been out a few times since, and no egg. Or atleast I haven't been able to find one. She could have possibly hidden it real well, but they have only been in the barn because I didn't want to search my yard for one. So far no egg. Is that normal once they start to not lay on the 2nd day? or should I keep looking? My 8 y/o daughter did notice in the corner looks like she might have been starting a nest. She had her shavings and stray piled in a circle with a little feathers "sprinkled" on top. I just went out and gave them water and poked around in it for a second but didn't find an egg. Kind of disappointed because I thought they were going to lay 1 a day. I'm still hopeful though. I need to clean out the pen after lunch so we'll see what happens.

While I was cleaning out their pen, they were out roaming around. My daughter found an egg in the woods. So yes she did end up laying today as well

We brought it into their coop and put it where she had started to make herself a little nest. We have decided that we not try to hatch out the first few eggs, but we are going to leave them in there for a few days and when they are more normal size, remove these ones and start to let her pile them up and see if she will go broody. My husband seems to think that if we leave the eggs in there that we don't plan on hatching then she will be more apt to sit on them when we want her to.... I'm not so sure but am humoring him.

pekinduck<3er :

how old was she when she laid that egg and wat type?

She is a pekin and hatched like end of oct. So quick calculation is about 5 months. She laid her first egg yesterday (4/5/11) and we took it and ended up cracking it and saw the germinal disc. Then laid the 2nd one today.
