I have had my own chickens for a little over a year now, a nice mix of Speckled Sussex, Araucanas, and Barred Rocks. I got them as little peepers and they were in my bathroom for a while as I anxiously checked them a million times. They are very friendly due to all the immediate hand-holding.
We named them: Blackberry, Boysenberry, Chicken Little, Ursula, Foghorn Leghorn, Kitana, Milena, Jade (Mortal Kombat characters), Hawkeye, Fatty (sorry, she was a little round plump of feathers that kinda rolled around). Nowadays, she is my best Japanese beetle remover.
I started selling the eggs at work and people loved them and I loved being able to sell them!
A very good friend of mine is quite a serious farmer, and she answered all my questions for about a year, including giving me 6 fertilized eggs (I have no rooster) so a broody hen of mine could try to hatch! She hatched two!
One was a rooster, who we returned to his rooster-father's land, and the other one we named "Rodeo Pete" (she's kinda crazy and spazzy).
Then I brought home two pullets, who are named Rodeo Clown and Chupacabra. They are not nearly as people friendly as my original crew. I regret this and will never bring started birds into my flock again....because...
Recently my flock has come down with health problems (possibly from the pullets). I'm sad to say the obviously sick ones are from my original crew: Foghorn Leghorn, Boysenberry, Jade, Kitana, Hawkeye and Chicken Little. A google search on treatment lead me here and I'm seeing great advice from really intelligent and experienced people.
I'm so glad to join and network!
Otherwise, I live by the Shenandoah River, have 2 big dogs, like to garden, and teach Language Arts in a middle school. I'm married to a project manager for a concrete company, and though he "doesn't care about the chickens", he has named a bunch, builds things for them, and now tends to sick ones rather dutifully.
