Sooo, I’ve found multiple nests throughout the stall in which Daphne and her Muscovy sisters sleep over the past week. Yesterday, my black/white ‘Scovy, who is now 9.5 months old, seemed different. She seemed a bit calmer than she has been lately. Both ‘Scovy sisters have been acting extremely hormonal and grumpy recently. Yesterday, my tiniest duck seemed more ... mature.

Just now, I went to clean up for the evening and found the loveliest little egg ever! Both pictures above are of the same egg. Congrats to one of my little ‘Scovy girls!

As an overall update on my ‘Scovies, “Goon 2”, the little black and white hen, has matured into a mostly lovely little bird. She is still way more vocal than her sister (she never really stops trilling or chirping, ever). She is my most independent duck. She enjoys taking brief flights just because... She hates cold weather, but made it through winter like a champ! She is the bottom hen, status-wise.

“Goon 1”, my white Muscovy, has matured into a nice calm bird who is quieter than her sister (she mostly responds, rather than initiating conversations). She is still a horrible flier and she knows it (she landed in a bucket over the weekend), so she usually walks. Goon 1 and Daphne share the top of the hierarchy.

Both are lovely little birds :love

Congrats on the egg lovely scovys!!

Thank you! It’s a perfect little egg too, with a nice smooth shell that appears to be properly thick (I’ll find out for sure when I cook it for breakfast tomorrow). It is about the size of a larger chicken egg.

They are still eating flock raiser, but I’ve been offering oyster shell in another bowl and I’ve been mixing some oyster shell in with their feed over the past week (after seeing all of those nests).

Do you think I should make any other changes?

And on this day, April 7, 2019, Goon 1 finally officially proved herself to be a hen :love And I must now apologize for this picture from 6 months ago (created during the lengthy and confusing “drake or hen?” Period of 2018). :lau

There were actually THREE eggs this morning, so I either missed 1 of Goon 1’s yesterday, or Daphne might also be laying. Think I just missed an egg somehow as all 3 look like ‘Scovy eggs. :idunno

Just as a note, I believe that Daphne laid her first egg in roughly 6 months overnight. It looks perfect, not at all misshapen or soft. I assume it is hers as it is in a different nest and is larger than the ‘Scovy eggs. Here’s to hoping for no complications!

‘Scovy note - Goon 2 is moderately broody. I have to carry her outside in the AM, but that is sufficient to interrupt her broodiness for at least a bit. Goon 1 seems to have gone from zero to 100% broody overnight and is currently sitting and squeaking loudly at anyone who dares to get near. I’ll remove all eggs this weekend.

Daphne is disappointed that her buddies don’t want to go on adventures with her. Maybe it really is time for a Mallard derived buddy for her.
