I have been HARRASSING my husband since 2006 that I want to get chickens. I think he's finally getting that I'm not going to let it go so he's given me the red light for 4 hens!!
With a few stipulations (of course  ) he wants to finish the back fence first, then he needs a chicken education, and I take him and our girls to the farm I will be getting them from and let everyone pick them out.
Also that I get at least two that lay brown eggs. No matter how many times I explain to him that brown eggs are really no different than white eggs he does have a valid point...brown eggs cost more in the store. So for him, it justifies the expense and time in adding more pets to our home.

I'm probably going to be able to get my girls in about 6 weeks.

I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We have 2 little girls, ages 4 and soon to be 3. A Golden Retriever, a northern painted turtle, and 2 fair-won goldfish.

We plan for 2 bantam cochins, a bantam ameraucana and a silkie. We are starting out with a dog crate in the living room but when we move outside I've found a Egglu on craigslist.

I'm so excited to be here!

Hello and
welcome-byc.gif
from WA state. Took me a while to convince my Husband too, so I can relate. Have fun!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

While I have them both, and enjoy them very much, neither silkies or cochins are the best egg layers. Some of the ams are good layers, but some are also a little slow in the egg laying department (like my bantam lavender Ams, they are very cute but come up with 2 eggs a week between the two one-year old girls).

Hi, I'm relatively new to the world of Chickens too, 2/12. I have 8 hens of various ages: 1 Bardrock, 1 New Hampshire Red, 3 Red Sexlinks, 1 Delaware, and 2 Astroloups. I found them on Craigslist - from a graduating senior who had been in Future Farmers of America and her parents were done with chickens as she was going off to college. Took me a couple of years to convince my husband that we should have chickens, but he loves them as much as I do now. Our kids are grown. We have 3 rottweilers who like hanging out with the "Girls".

I was told my chickens were between 1 and 3 years old - does any one know how to tell how old they are? I'm getting between 5-7 eggs a day (a couple of times I got 8).

They are a lot of fun and very social. They run and greet me when I get home each evening. Enjoy!!

Welcome from Fort Lauderdale (Davie), FL! I am new to chickens too. I was on the one year plan kind of similar to yours; 1.) Hubby secures perimeter, 2.) I learn everything i need to know about chickens, 3.) We all go to pick them out together. Found BYC 3 weeks ago and snuck out and came home with two chicks just because I HAD TO HAVE THEM. Still no coop. Still no secured fence. Still dont know everything about chickens. Got two breeds that werent even on my wishlist. Now i have to hustle and find 2 more breeds QUICK because I want them to grow up together. Yeah, im a little chicken obsessed right now. I wouldnt have it any other way.

On the upside! I spend way less time online looking at everyone else's chickens, and more time spending time with mine in real life. Definitely worth it. I love my monsters.

You will love this group and when you are ready you will know. Welcome to the big chicken adventure!

Xoxo Annmarie
