Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan![]()
While I have them both, and enjoy them very much, neither silkies or cochins are the best egg layers. Some of the ams are good layers, but some are also a little slow in the egg laying department (like my bantam lavender Ams, they are very cute but come up with 2 eggs a week between the two one-year old girls).
Welcome from Fort Lauderdale (Davie), FL! I am new to chickens too. I was on the one year plan kind of similar to yours; 1.) Hubby secures perimeter, 2.) I learn everything i need to know about chickens, 3.) We all go to pick them out together. Found BYC 3 weeks ago and snuck out and came home with two chicks just because I HAD TO HAVE THEM. Still no coop. Still no secured fence. Still dont know everything about chickens. Got two breeds that werent even on my wishlist. Now i have to hustle and find 2 more breeds QUICK because I want them to grow up together. Yeah, im a little chicken obsessed right now. I wouldnt have it any other way.
On the upside! I spend way less time online looking at everyone else's chickens, and more time spending time with mine in real life. Definitely worth it. I love my monsters.
You will love this group and when you are ready you will know. Welcome to the big chicken adventure!
Xoxo Annmarie
