So here's a little bit about my flock and their humans.

My husband FINALLY gave in to my request for chickens when our son went off to bootcamp and he could see I would climb the walls as an 'empty nester'. So he relented and we picked up 3 cute lil sexlinks chicks and just about every book and magazine on raising backyard chickens. We spent time handling them everyday to get them used to us and I could see he was enjoying them almost as much as I was. After a couple months, my little brood was ready for the great outdoors. We have a 1/4 acre fully fenced backyard. Layla, Lulu, and Evie were happy as can be.

But I thought our little brood was a little too small to be considered a 'flock'. So we agreed that 6 chickens would be a good number that we could manage and have lots of eggs. So we went to the hatchery to pick up 3 and left with 4 (because they're so darned cute) and on the way home we stopped a D&B Supply to get more feed and WHAT?! They had the silliest little chicks EVER and we came home with 2 Crested Polish chicks. So we went out for 3 and came home with 6. Hhhmmm... 9 is a flock!

So now we have a flock of 9 very unique personalities.
1 Golden Sexlink = Lulu is the first to try new food and always heads for the highest spot.
2 Black Sexlinks = Layla and Evie. Layla is a camera flirt and is always ready for her closeup. Evie is our 'special needs' chicken. Her feet are deformed (always have been) and she loves to be held and reassured that she's beautiful. She'll fall asleep in my arms if I sing to her.
1 Brown Leghorn = Shirley (as in Muldowney) and MAN of man is she fast! She puts her head down and runs like mad and turns on a dime.
2 Rhode Island Reds = Sadie and Sable. They are truly sisters. They go EVERYWHERE as a pair.
1 Barred Rock = LottieDa. She's the most dignified. Doesn't like her feet to get dirty. Doesn't throw her food everywhere. Even her dust baths are more refined than the other girls.
2 Crested Polish = Phyllis (as in Diller) and Ava (as in Gabore). Wow are they lookers. Silliest birds in the bunch. Almost clownish in everything they do. I think the other girls are alittle jealous of their fancy hair-do's.

We have 2 cats. One is a 20 lbs senior citizen who thinks chickens are obnoxious, loud and stinky and will have nothing to do with them. The other is a 2year old who has been fascinated by his feathered sisters since the day we brought them home and introduced them. Now that his sisters are almost full grown, he gets bullied around the yard by them and loves every minute of it.

Our son is set to graduate from bootcamp on 8/19/11 and I couldn't be more proud of him.

So that's us. Oh and I'm on Facebook with lots of pictures of my brood (even the humans). Friend me... Felicia Kruck ([email protected])
