So Im raising meat birds for the first time. Rainbow rangers. Ive noticed a good layer of yellow fat protecting their organs when we harvested them. Dont laugh! Can you eat/use that fat? Or does it taste like the stinky insides its been resting against?

I totally agree. You can use that fat.

You'll notice the girls may have a lot more than the boys, especially if you wait a bit to butcher them. That's normal and natural, do not be concerned. Often the girls have a huge "fat pad" in the pelvic area. a huge amount of fat.

That extra fat is what broody hens live off of when they are broody so they can incubate the eggs instead of having to be out looking for food. I really see that pad in dual purpose pullets and older dual purpose spent hens. Some people get excited or concerned when they see that when they butcher. It's nothing to worry about.

I’ve heard you can use chicken fat in soap-making. Supposed to be very conditioning. Will make a soft soap by itself, but can be mixed with other oils/fats for a harder bar.

Some of my cockerels had “butt fat pads” too!

Thank you for responding! Its good to know it wont have an off flavor, so I'll be sure to use it!
