We were trimming vents today since there so bad from a super wet winter and spring. I noticed this on our rooster and have never seen anything like it. Any thoughts? It’s like a part of the skin.

It might be stuck on poop, or he might have vent gleet, a fungal infection. I would soak him in warm Epsom salts once a day for 20 minutes until his vent gets clear. Try to gently rub off the material with a cloth. Be sure to dry him thoroughly with a towel and hair dryer. Apply Nustock Cream (found in the horse supplies in feed stores,) miconazole, or clotrimazole cream twice a day. Here is some reading:

Everything I’ve seen on vent gleet looks very different. This is almost like another layer of skin, the way it’s dry and patchy. My husband said he smelled bad but I was closer and didn’t smell anything.

Have you tried soaking him in the warm Epsom salts, letting it soften, and wiping it off? You could try one of the antifungal creams recommended or vaseline to try and soften it. I am thinking it is dried poop or fungal infection.
