My GLW is about 16 months and i noticed yellow poop and lazy. She goes with the chickens but than just stands around. I thought she has been molting because i see feathers all over, but now i am not sure. This behavior (minus the yellow poop) has happened B4 but she came around. Im not sure what to do. I crushed a calcium citrate and gave her some hard boiled egg. She ate it well enough. Is there anything else i can do?? Thank you

She may be starting to molt, you can check by looking for pin feathers coming in.

See that she's eating/drinking and that her crop is emptying. Look her over for lice/mites.
The yellow urates could indicate something going on with her liver. Has she been laying eggs? Could be a bit of egg yolks?

The Calcium Citrate is a good idea if she's having problems expelling an egg or membrane.
I'd continue with that for a few days and see how she's doing.

Wyorp, thanks for your time. Chicken has not laid an egg for a couple weeks (90% sure anyway). This morning, i did see another yellow dropping that was splattered on run floor this AM. She did not poop overnight. I put them to roost and she got pushed off and when that happens, she sleeps in the nest. i did not see a dropping in the nest this morning. She did eat before roost as well. I did give her a little crushed calcium citrate with her wet mash this AM. She ate it but didnt join the others at the morning mash bowl. This morning i also started the Corid amprolium treatment that i will continue for 5 days. Send good vibes to Biggie for me and may your flock thrive always!

I'd re-check her crop in the morning to make sure it's emptying.
If she's molting, she may be feeling lousy, but it's always good to keep watch on them.

Not pooping all night is a bit of a concern, so watch to see if she's able to go during the day if possible. They never seem to poop when you want to monitor them.

I do hope she starts feeling better, keep me posted.

Hey wyorp, Today has been better for Biggie. I confirmed shes molting by looking for pin feathers which i found. Also, as of now, 4:45pm, her poop is no longer 100% yellow and no longer splatter. I attached a pic of her most recent dropping. (i think 🤣) i have to say I am feeling much better about her prognosis. I have a couple of questions while i have you here.
* does molting stop egg production? Shes a GLW
* is molting known to cause any other common issues i should be mindful of? Behavior wise, i'm clear on.
* if a crop has not emptied in the AM, what should I do immediately?
* is it common for a molting chicken to have uncommon droppings?
* is it possible that yellow is yolk? It really looks like it, but i just dont know if it works that way. (Its tough being a noob!)
Thank you so much for your time Wyorp. Having support is just as important as alleviating the issue IMO. ☮️❤️🌻🐓🐝

I'm glad she's doing a little better.

Most hens do go out of lay during molt.
Molting is a totally natural process where a bird sheds old, broken and worn out feathers and those are replaced with new. Some birds do seem to feel unwell during this time, think about all those pin feathers coming in pushing through the skin!
They may seem standoffish and don't want to be touched, I think being handled may be painful for them during molt.
Some of mine don't eat as much or they are keen on just one thing like their daily treat. During molt, I try to give a bit of extra protein like cooked eggs, I just give all the girls a little treat a couple of times a week but make sure the molter gets her share.

Droppings can vary, but I do agree, the yellow in her poop is cause to pause. It may be yolk, but likely it's yellow urates. Yellow urates could be an indication of liver dysfunction. What do you feed including treats? Do you give a lot of treats? If you do, then cut back on them.

IF her crop has not emptied overnight, then treat her according to the article below. Sometimes a molting hen may end up with crop issues if they are not staying hydrated and eating well.

Thanks a lot for the attached article. Their feed is Natures Best 16% egg layer pellets with crushed egg shells and oyster shells. I started this feed in April (they were 11 months). Before that I had them on 18% chick starter feed with side of egg shells and oyster shell. This is available all day. Their 'treats' is organic scratch. I was throwing about a 1/4 cup a day for the past couple weeks. They also have been getting the sunflower seeds from my sunflower harvest. Too many in my opinion. As i harvested the sunflowers, i would share and they were SO happy like nothing i've ever seen! I even hung them in the coop. (Too much, i know.) i hope my gal can recover. Her poop had yellow this morning, but less of it. Tomorrow morning I will check her crop. I will also weigh her. I gave her some scrambled egg with the calcium citrate again this morning. I started amprolium on the 16th. 1/2 teaspoon per gallon i did. I dunno, we shall see. Quick question, is it uncommon for a chicken to go lay, but leave NO egg and still sing the song? Thanks again. We can only try our best.
