Hi! I have a hen who has been having horrible yellow, watery diarrhea for two days. I can’t see any parasites in her stool but maybe some trained eyes can see something I don’t. We separated her yesterday (she is currently in my spare bathroom). She was lethargic and puffy but has since perked up a bit but still has diarrhea. She is still eating and drinking. I’ve provided her with her regular food, grit, ACV water, watered down yogurt and some electrolytes. The other members of the flock are not showing any signs of sickness right now. I don’t have access to an agri vet until at least Monday, but there is a dog/cat/not exotic vet open until 7pm. Is there anything specific I can tell them to help me or should I just wait it out? I really appreciate all the help and advice anyone can provide.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)

Noiran, 1.5 years old. Unknown weight but is the flock punching bag and is lower weight than I would like.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

Lethargy, puffed up, diarrhea

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

2 days

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

No

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.

Feathers missing due to bullying that won’t grow back on butt.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

No situational causes known. I cleaned out their coop and run a few days prior to her getting sick. No change in cleaning routine.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

Small amounts of her regular pellet food (18%)

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

Yellow, very watery, some grainy parts

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

Isolation, ACV, homemade electrolytes (sugar/salt/baking soda), yogurt, offered eggs.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

If treatment can happen at home it would be ideal, no access to agriculture vet until Monday (unless non agricultural vet can provide treatment).

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

Please see attached. The white specks on her face and body is yogurt. She is shaking her head and getting yogurt everywhere.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Indoor/outdoor access to 8x8 ish indoor enclosure and 16x18 ish run. 3 birds live there total. Deep litter inside, sandy/dirt outside in run.

Maybe her condition is bc of a slow moult. Or maybe she ate. Omething wrong? Or she’s sick. But I’m no expert with sick chickens. Only know a bit from reading some articles /threads. Maybe ask one of the amateur vets or nursing experts. ? Or take the poop to a vet/lab for diagnosis.

Chickens who are stressed (the pecking) are vulnerable for all kind of diseases and parasites.

That’s why most hobbyists find it important to give the chickens much space and distraction. Good ventilation and free range if possible.

I suspect a reproductive infection. Caught early it may be treatable with an antibiotic. Ask the vet if they feel it worthwhile to put her on an antibiotic.

Meanwhile, to solidify the poop and to give her some energy, offer her some boiled rice with some egg stirred in.

Thank you for the reply! I’ll see if the non agricultural vet will prescribe but if not I’ll wait until Monday when the agriculture vet opens again. I’ll get her some rice and eggs now :)
