I just wish I could get some chicks to hatch...

Congrats on the hatch, but it must be disappointing to not get what you wanted.

It was definitely disappointing, since I needed a welsummer roo but I hate to use one that might not be pure. The person I bought from has seen the post and is upset, says they don't have any Delawares or white chickens. If this is the case, I think maybe the welsummers just weren't pure to begin with.

I don't see any markings on the yellow chick.

She/he shouldn't be upset by anything you've said. Maybe upset that his/her Welsummers aren't pure, but not upset with you.

Actually it could be pure bred Welsumer. It seems this has been happening a bit of late due to alot of linebreeding going on. Something that can not be avoided due to there was only 3 strains to work with. As Krys109uk said it is rare but does happen. It can be one of two things a genentic throwback or a sport. But still a pure welsumer.

I might go for that, except that there is only one of the three that looks the right color, the other chick is light brown.

I must agree there has been alot going on this year. Maybe it is the year of the Golden Chick! However I have no idea where that came from but possibly a throw back from one of the old breeds.

Inbreeding???? I dont know for sure but with that many going around, I dont think it would be inbreeding.

Ok, I think it is unlikely I just have a very unusual chick here--or three, since I just hatched another light brown one. So if you have hatched out a yellow welsummer chick, please pm me so we can see if we got eggs from the same person.

It would be interesting to see what color of eggs that they lay. You could have bragging rights. A yellow hen that lays dark brown eggs. I would be so curious to see those eggs.

Yeah, well I would rather have welsummers, lol. I have sent pms to two other people who I found had hatched out yellow welsummer chicks and I hope they write me back and tell me how their chicks turned out and who they bought their eggs from.

I hadn't spotted the variety of chick down colours when I wrote the post about the recessive white Wellies which used to crop up in some lines of Wellies in Britain. With three different chick downs, that seems an unlikely explanation.
