I have a beautiful bantam that has stopped running around like usual. She hasn't been eating but she did drink a bit this morning. I give them Rooster booster with prebiotic and lactobacillus every day in their water and diatomacous earth in the wood chips and in their food/treats. She has been lethargic and just standing in the coop, no eggs but her vent appears to be continually pulsing like she wants to do something. It is not hard but soft. I've given her a warm soak bath, trimmed the hair around the vent as it was sticking bad to her feathers and stinky. I put some garlic in her water and put out some warm oatmeal with pellets and red pepper flakes and have her separated sitting in front of the fire so she doesn't get a chill... is there anything else I should be doing? Thank you!

Sorry your chicken isn’t feeling well. Is this chicken laying eggs currently? I would get some calcium citrate plus D3 into her as soon as you can. For a full grown hen, it’s 400-600mg, a bantam would be a bit less, but I’m not sure how much less, it’ll depend on her size. Also, have you checked her crop first thing in the mornings to ensure it’s emptying? It should be flat first thing in the mornings.

If you can, post some pics of her and her poop, that could help, too.

I would also provide her with a fresh source of water, too, if you haven’t already.
Thank you. Here are some pics.

Thank you. I sent two pics. One of her bottom sorry. Henifer is drinking and eating now and had released a large poo twice. I think she's feeling a bit better as she is grooming, drinking water and eating yogurt.

I also recommend giving some human calcium citrate or carbonate, or a Tums cut in half orally. pop it into her beak to swallow. She may be egg bound or trying to pass some lash material. Has she laid up to now, and have her eggs been normal with hard shells? Her tail being down looks like she is having some reproductive troubles or is egg bound. If you can get a picture of her poop, that may help. Offer some sugar water or electrolytes and some wet chicken feed or moistened egg.

Update... henifer seems to be feeling better. She is eating and drinking and has released alot of liquid poo. Her poop is now formed green with white in top. I had to crush up the calcium citrate and cook it with a scrambled egg but she did eat it. My question now is, is that large ball like shape below the vent normal? Her feathers normally hide this part with her puff. When she lays down she seems to be leaning to one side. I appreciate all your feedback.

Im glad she is doing better. She sounds like she may be having reproductive issues. For future reference, they should be able to swallow a calcium citrate plus d3 tablet whole, that way they get the full amount. Just gently pull the wattles down and pop the pill into the back corner of the mouth. She should swallow fine. Remember they are able to eat mice whole.

As for the bump, what does it feel like? Squishy, hard? Compare the feel to the other hens in your flock.

She might be accumulating fluid or pus back there due to an infection, usually reproductive in nature. It could just be fat, though. I had a hen develop a swollen abdomen like that and she had it for about a year before she showed any outward signs of reproductive issues. It ended up being due to an infection and she became really sick. I treated her with amoxicillin for 1 week once she showed signs of illness and the swelling actually subsided for about 3 months and she felt good again. It eventually came back and a second round of antibiotics didn’t work. She ended up passing away. I wish there as more we could do for them when reproductive issues come up, but sometimes just making them comfortable is the only thing.

Hopefully your hen continues to feel well and the padding back there is just fat.

The bump is squishy. She actually discharged what could've been a soft shell. She was ate another calcium citrate with her egg and seems to be doing ok. She was back to her talkative or squalkative nature today acting mad to be in the crate. I'm going to keep an eye on her and hope it's just fatty. Thank you so much for your help. I'm keeping the calcium on hand now.

I’m really glad she is improving! Good idea; Ca+D3 is the thing that is most often used in our chicken first aid kit.

Was it a lash egg by chance? Sometimes once they pass a lash egg they will feel better for a while, too. Almost like expelling it releases pressure.
