Yet another silkie question

Yeah George is a nice guy. Are you sure you didnt misunderstand him? I don't see why he would say anything like that. He knows his stuff. And I may not be as famous as him with the silkies. But Ive had them for over 7 years and they do indeed crow and they are not color sexed.

He is kind of hard to understand, but I was kind of insistant on this point, and he repeated a few times that silkie roos don't crow. Maybe he meant not comapred to other roos?

maybe. no way of telling unless you asked him. But its true. Trust me and trust the others that have posted here. They crow. There is no such thing as a rooster that does not crow. Unless its a cooked rooster lol

Some vary. I had a hen I thought was a hen, till she started crowing at 8 months old. Had the body shape and everything of a hen. But of course it was a rooster. With silkies its kind of hard. Usually roosters will start sprouting streamer feathers out of the head feathers. Hens get more of a round body then roosters too. But they dont have the streamer feathers that roosters do on the head. I think silkies are some of the hardest chickens to properly sex untill they start either laying eggs or crowing. So usually around 6-8 months. Thats about how long it takes.

Good to know. I'm going to refer to her hopefully as a she!

The bad thing; sounds like by the time I know for sure I will already be very attached.

My silkie Rooster (his name is Zeus ) is a year old this month and he does NOT crow and never has even tried...but i love him anyway

...much more sweet rooster than my fathers Americana rooster who attacks EVERYONE and crows day and night!

I thought I finally got a quite roo... third times a charm right??? Well my neibor asked me a week or so ago... "do you have 2 roosters now?" guess the bird is up before dawn crowing untill he sees the sun and them does not make another peep for the rest of the day....

who knew....

someone told me the same thing... "They are quiet, no one would even know you have it..." so I bought one, put it in the coop.... The next morning I woke up to my hubby....

"You DIDN'T get a rooster!?!" oppps

My silkie roo crows more than my RIR roo. We moved the silkies last night and when I did not hear him crowing at 4:30 was worried for a minute until I remembered he was farther from the house than he had been.
