my first thought was "WOW! what a beautiful snake!"
i say just convince him into a pillow case or bucket. take him far far away and let him loose. i love snakes, but i live in Alaska and we don't get any. My boyfriend is from West Virginia and we're planning one visiting there one day. I'd be looking under every rock and frolicking in the woods looking for animals i've never seen before.
I have a red rat that has taken up residence in my area. While I am not a fan of snakes, if it isn't poisonsous and doesn't start dining on my chickens/eggs/chics will let them stay.
Notice the large lump in its midsection? Ala carte-rat

Wow that red rat snake sure did consume a rather large snack there. I like the red ones, they are harder to find here in Alabama. Not as common as the black ones.

VERY cool! i was worried that it had consumed a pullet. glad to know it's a big rat in there! There aren't any rats in Alaska, i saw ONE when i went to Georgia. i couldn't tell whether it was a Wolverine or a vampire!
another beautiful snake, thanks for sharing. I always feel lucky to find a snake. Rats snakes are special, beautiful, great rodent/pest control and great pets if they are bred in captivity (I'm not much one for taking them out of their native habitats to make them into pets). MY dad used to breed snakes as a hobby/small business... he was the first in the world to successfully breed a couple of rare snakes in captivity.
We had a beautiful red ratsnake snack on two guinea chicks a couple of years ago, just another learning experience for us here. Since then we know to make sure that they can't get to the babies, never had a problem with one taking eggs but if they will keep the rodents in check I can spare an egg or two for sure!
Sad to think he got his head chopped off (assuming so anyway with the axe reference). I have a large (over 5') one here I tend to see once a year just to let me know she is still around.
We love her. Oh my!!! The red one!!! I didn't know they came in that color!!! GORGEOUS!!!!
