So, we got the coop structure mostly up yesterday (when I say We I mean my hubby and his dad LOL). It is basically a 4X8 rectangle 8'tall on one side and 7.5 on the other. I am thinking of putting permanently open vents along the the higher 8'long side. Our door is on that side also so, the vented area would be about 6'long. I was thinking of making the holes 6" wide. Our winters here do not get brutally cold and I am not insulating. Is this too much "always open" ventilation? I'm thinking it is not. Should I think about putting it on the shorter side so that I don't lose "all" the warm air in the winter? I am also adding a "bunch" of other ventilation points I can close. Eventually they will be windows but, for now they will just be hardware wire covered holes with flaps to close.

Get the picture? Thoughts?

Ventilation is important in winter as well as summer. Chickens come with down comforters to protect from the cold. It is the draftiness that harms them in winter.

It is dampness at only slightly cold weather that will create frostbite, have about 1 sqft of ventilation per bird. Poop needs air circulation to dry too.

Do a search for 'cut more holes in your coop'
