Finally...finally...finally(!)...I am officially one of you. As of 3 days ago or so, I have 17 baby production red pullets, 15 barred rock plymouth pullets, 6 barred rock straight run (I figured I'd get 4-5 roosters out of that :0). And 6 straight run ducks that I hope and think are Khaki campbells. We want to sell both chicken and duck eggs eventually, and perhaps some live chicks or fertilized eggs from the barred rocks and khaki campbells. I hope to order some khaki campbells from Ideal, which all these came from via Tractor Supply and a feed store in our area. That seems to be why Ideal isn't selling some poultry to the average Joe right now, too busy filling these big contracts with Tractor Supply and the feed stores. But I think I can still order the Khakis so I can get some females in the ducks. If worse comes to worse, Ideal is only about 80 miles from me, so hopefully if I can't get my orders filled before the hot weather cuts off the mail order, I can drive down to pick them up.
Cutest thing, my two English Shepherds have to go racing into the house to check on the babies first thing. They hang over the edge of the 100 gallon horse trough we're using for the brooder and just watch them, no signs of aggression, thank goodness. My male was exposed to chickens as a pup, but not my female, but she seems even more peaceful around them than my male. Here's hoping it stays that way!
Anyway, I'm excited. I'm finally officially one of you!
