Yogurt is SO MUCH FUN!!!

cambriagardener,

I feed my 10 girls about 1/2 cup plain yogurt 2-3 times a week in a stainless steel dog bowl - the kind that can't tip over. I've yet to mix it with anything. They also love cottage cheese.

They briefly turn into crazed little beasties that I'm ashamed to call "mine",

and make quite a mess of themselves. Then, picking up the empty bowl is a bit of a trick 'cause they rush the bowl again when I reach down to get it, thinking it's a refill.

I have to distract them or use my foot or something to keep from being pecked (or attacked, depending on how you look at it), which I don't enjoy much. YMMV.

I tossed about 20 crickets into a brooder with 7 10-day-old chicks this past weekend.

Stage 1: Fear

Stage 2: Curiosity

Stage 3: Pecking at crickets

Stage 4: Dim light bulbs go on: this is food. Really really yummy food.

Stage 5: Grab & run

Multiply that by 7 chicks in a small brooder and you've got mass hysteria (and a hysterically laughing Jenn).

Thanks OKbirdwatcher,

I'm going to try it. For a while I was afraid I'd killed the tread by asking a sincere question! But you came through!

I am in shock....

I gave my chickens a bowl of yogurt and...
They kicked their bedding in it

I am kinda sad.

The first few times I held a spoon with a big dollop of it and fed it to them to avoid the bedding-in-my-freshly-prepared-yogurt catastrophe. Now I just feed them out of my hand. Kinda yucky I know but that's what hand washing is for! Doing this also helps convince myself that my chicks are starting to like me

i am surprised that raw rice is not recommended --- anyone know why?

I'm venturing to guess that it's a lot harder to digest (if at all) because the starch hasn't broken down. Brown rice is probably worse because the bran is still intact, making it even less digestable.
