Yolk growing OUTSIDE of the egg

Okay, this morning my husband brought in an egg that looked like two eggs conjoined. But, upon further inspection, it seems the took grew outside of the egg with its own shell and a small shell tube protecting the umbilicus. Any clue what nthat's all about?!

You must find a way to post a pic! That sounds fascinating. How long has the hen been laying? When they're just starting up, it can take a little while for their systems to get it right.
