Yolk Peritonitis?

Red has been livelier today than she has since all this began, which gave me some hope. I currently have her on electrolytes and will be administering Oxytetracycline soon to see if we can't knock out whatever has her down. It's worth a shot. If things don't improve, we will have a backyard funeral for her...but we're hoping a little extra TLC, and some antibiotics will help her recover.

Update on Red:
Still not interested in eating, but she does drink occasionally. Still dehydrated and lethargic, with raspy breathing. When she naps she lays rather forward with her rear-end in the air. Still no swelling of the abdomen or vent, or any other noticeable yolk-colored (or otherwise suspicious) discharge. Perhaps it's a respiratory infection? We started her on electrolytes yesterday & Oxytetracycline today...this pic is of me feeding her the "medicated gatorade water" (as my daughter called it). Here's hoping it helps. Will try to get her to eat something later.

Thank you. I just don't know if anything we're doing is working. I hate thinking of her suffering this long, especially with no signs of improvement. The thing that gives us hope is that she doesn't appear to be deteriorating either. I just don't know what else to do, and if this isn't going to get better or worse, perhaps we should make our decision.

I'm reading this and I too have a sick chicken. Not anything like what's going on with yours but I couldn't even think about culling mine. They've become my pets because I raised them since they were little. I hope Red gets better. I don't want my chicken to suffer either but I think what I'm giving her will work. Mine's not deteriorating either. She perks up sometimes which gives me hope. Hate to hear this. Good luck with her!

Thank you. When we got Red she was 3months old. She's still a part of this family, but like a cat or a dog (etc...) we would put her out of her misery if there was nothing more we could do.

Yeah. I couldn't get myself to do it even if it was the best for them. I've lost a LOT of pets in my lifetime and I'd hate to lose another. I'm going to try everything I an. If this doesn't help her we will probably lose 2 or 3 chickens because they've all got a touch of what my sickest one does. The rest aren't bad though.

I've said prayers over all my animals. Cats, dogs, and, now, chickens. lol. It's been working because my chicken's feeling better already. I about to cry with happiness. I want to be a vet so prayers will come in handy for me for the rest of my life haha

Thank you, everyone. Our hearts are lighter knowing Red's suffering has ended.

We had Red's funeral this evening & our daughter is taking it remarkably well.

I'm not sure if The Ladies & The Girls have really noticed Red's absence...even though she used to be "Head Honcho". I guess our 9 chickens will have to reconfigure their pecking order now.
