Here is a group that worked with townships and all birds banded are exempt from certian laws, this is springing up all over the place ask people in these urban chicken clubs how they got this leg banding deal. In one US city they caved into the chicken .... mad as a wet hen group (not this group)... and allowed them to keep 3 hens in town up to 6 if conditions were appropriate. This is canadian but being adopted here and there in US. Brits and ireland also have set ups and commune type chicken areas in urban settings where people come in work thier birds on a small plot that gets inspected every so often , lots of officials look the other way on a rooster or 2

This is the most
important exemption in thier new law and an important point to try to get added to your local law :

To Calgary City Council:

Chickens have existed in cities since the dawn of time, and they still exist all over the world. Benefits to raising hens in the City of Calgary include:
1. Fresh, healthy, delicious eggs, free of pesticides and antibiotics.
2. Chickens eat table scrapes, reducing municipal organic waste.
3. Chickens produce a rich fertilizer by-product, high in nitrogen, eliminating the need for petrochemical fertilizers.
4. Educational - teaches children where our food comes from and demonstrates responsible pet ownership(chores).
5. Great pets - Chickens are people-friendly.
6. Chickens eat bugs, reducing our backyard pest population.
