Quiet! I don't like them on loud, I like to be able to hear what is going on around me. I could only tell there was a woman's voice speaking, I couldn't hear what she was saying. They were just sitting on the desk next to me so there wasn't anything blocking the speaker.
Maybe they've just got bad noise insulation.
That's possible. They're not very expensive. I only use them when I'm watching (guilty pleasure) police body cam videos. For some reason the *voom voom* sound that periodically plays (to alert you that the body cam is recording) bothers one of my dogs. I think sometimes that sound can also be a high-pitched beep, which maybe hurts his ears? Either way he gives me the stink eye and leaves the room.
So I use headphones.
