Ok, looking to move and I have looked at lots of properties. I never carry a gun with me but NOW I WILL. After walking 5.5 acres with the wife and one of my 4 kids, (a 4 yr old), we walked back to the house. As we were rounding the corner of the house, wife screams grabs kid and runs. I look up and a 250 BLACK BEAR

, walking across the front yard. He/She stops and looks at me then the wife running!!!!!! I yell to her to STOP RUNNING........and walk. I tried to take pictures but camera phone would not zoom in enough.

By the time I walked back to the van, the wife no longer had to use the little girls room

Over the years I have been up close and personal with bears on seven different occasions while out in the woods.

Every time it has been a HUGE adrenaline shot.

Ain't it fun

I just read this to my husband as I was laughing hysterically. Thankfully before moving to northeast TN we spent most of our summer living in the mountains in NY among black bears with friends of ours. We learned how to live amongst them and what NOT to do, such as running when seeing one. It was an amazing experience to look out the window and seeing black bears up close and personal especially when you're a city girl like I am.

I'm glad you guys are okay and I agree with your wife. Get some BIG DOGS!

better be a big gun..dont go makin him mad with a .22!

dont worry, I have lived with bears and they have not been confrontational. just keep the chicken feed inside somewhere secure, bears like chicken feed!

I had the same thing happen this past spring. Walking in the woods w/o a gun. Had a black bear charge & then turn 30 paces from me.

Won't make that mistake again.

You don't have to be in the county--black bears are invading urban areas as well. In the Binghamton NY/Triple Cities area they remove at least one per year--usually tranquilize the poor thing in a tree and haul it off--assuming it survives the fall. That is if some over zealous cop doesn't empty his service revolver into it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the bear. In my experience with black bears they've seemed more afraid of me than I of them (hard to believe!). They may attack if they have cubs nearby, but otherwise they just seem to be after my seeds and not my dogs or me. We have to pull our wild bird feeders until bear hibernation begins or they'll destroy them. Maybe a starter pistol will startle them away if you are truly worried.

Cool....buy a property, get a free bear:D.

I've lived on acreage in Minnesota most of my life, and we've had bears pass through pretty regularly. We have mastiffs, so they ONLY pass through.

What a spectacular thing to witness though. Just keep a spare set of underwear in the car next time;)
