You won't believe what my little quails did...

Mason Jelly Jars Keep The Mason Lids And Punch Or Drill Small Holes In The Lid--- Fill With Water And Secure It In An Upright Possition With The Lid Screwed On....

Also The Food Jars They Make--- I Came Home 1 Day After My First Hatch To Find 3 Babies Frantically Doing Laps Around The Inside Of The Mason Jar On Top Of The Food. Dont Ask Me How, But They Got Up Inside And Were Racing Around In There Like Lil Fluffy Nascar Racers... So If You Use The Jar Feeders Dont Use A The Jar, Just Use It Like An Open Food Dish!

They all seem to be fine, except for the one that drowned, obviously. Thanks for the good vibes!

In fact, I opened up the incubator this evening to put a TINY little waterer thing inside it so they would have something to drink and they all leaped up and tried, mostly successfully, to jump out! They were running all over the room, which is a little crowded and messy, and I wasn't sure I had found everybody, but they seem to all be there.

So I put them in their brooder box, as I didn't want to do that again.

I couldn't believe how fast they were; they were just like a bunch of little bugs or something.

They are cute, all right, but golly. I think just keeping them alive may be a bit of a trial, since they seem to have a sort of wish to run about and find places to disappear into.

Are they noted for having good hatches like that, or was I just lucky for a change?

People that have been getting eggs from me lately have been getting good hatches on them. Most do about the same that you did

Quail seem to hatch for me pretty well, I can't hatch chickens to save my life most times!

Shelleyd, actually they hatched a bit better than I originally said--I had 16 eggs and 13 hatched!

Of course, one jumped into the bowl and drowned himself, but 13 actually hatched!

I think that is a GREAT hatch.

Is it common for them to all hatch at once like that, within a two hour span of time?

I have some BO eggs in the other incubator. Two hatched yesterday, one this morning, one just hatched, and I can see one has pipped--I never had eggs that all hatched at once like those quail eggs did!

Actually, generally, I don't have eggs that hatch at all!

If your bator is stable throughout and the eggs are all the same age, they should hatch like that. I had some hatch a few days ago, 48 to be exact. They were all done within 3 or 4 hours of the first one hatching, if they even took that long. If you get some that stretch out real long (I've had some hatches go on for DAYS!! Not from my eggs though), then either the eggs were different ages (meaning some were a few days older upon receipt than others) or the bator had too many temp differences in it. I know mine (with the 5 day hatch) was not a bator issue, so apparently the eggs were all different ages.

In my opinion it isnt a good idea to put a jar or even a pan with water in it for humidity inside the incubator for reasons you just stated. If you want to bump the humidity up buy some sponges and use those. You can fill them up with warm water and then stick them in the incubator in the corners and if they dry out before the hatch is over, just pour some more warm water on them. I usually only need one sponge to bring up the humidity 10-15 degrees. And the other good part about the sponges, you can throw them away after the hatch, as i am sure they are bacteria haven!!
