You won't believe what the feed store told me to feed my ducks!

On a better note, Cocoa and Ebony are now eating the pellets.

All day yesterday we kept throwing them in there kiddy pool (there treat pool..lol) and they would run and dive in to eat it. So last night I filled up there bowl and told them to get it and they went waddling over and started to eat it out of the bowl.

They didn't do that little sneese choke that they usualy did with the crunbles so I was happy. They went along eating and going to the water bowl. So I think things are good with the feed situation.

Do you expect the people who stock the shelves in your groccery store to be experts in human nutrition? Since I assume the answer is no then why would you expect the clerks in a feed store, who are also mostly minimum wage employees, to be expert in all areas of animal nutrition.
It astounds me how many people on this board freely refer to others as idiots because they don't know something about poultry. With that as a measure the bulk of the American population is made up of idiots because relatively few of us care anything about poultry.
Somehow I doubt that Einstein knew anything about feeding ducks.

I am not really saying they are idiots I am saying this paricular store just doesn't care. I personaly think that if you are going to be in business like that then you need to know something about what you are doing.

The other feed store is great and they teach there employees. I think it is just about going that extra mile and now a days most people don't do that.

We're calling them idiots because when you go into a store saying what you want, and they ask you a series of questions, and you answer to be nice... Then they try to tell you you are wrong to feed your birds an excellent diet, because you could feed them next to nothing and they'll be fine. They pretty much scolded newchickmom09 for feeding her birds an adequate diet because they thought a diet of just scratch or cracked corn was good enough, without knowing really anything about her birds... We are saying we hate it when the feed store people try to tell you what to do with your birds and their advice isn't sound. There's normally a round of topics complaining about feed stores who don't properly care for their baby ducklings every spring too, because it happens... sad but true...

Because many of us grew up in a time and/or place where it was a societal norm to learn something about the job you are doing and actually earn whatever money you are being paid by knowing something about what you are doing, versus just standing there looking around at space and telling people that you don't know or just selling them something because it is on the shelf. My first job in retail was at a giant hardware store, and I came in there barely having made a napkin holder in industrial arts in school. But I took some pride in myself even though I was earning only minimum wage and learned about what I was selling to people. Too many people don't take pride anymore in what they do or how they look to other people out in public and that's why the level of service and quality of goods in this country has gone in the toilet...the "dumbing down" has reached every level of life. Yet these people still expect commissions and tips...I don't tip anywhere that I don't get good service, and that's my answer to their lack of care for what they're doing. Too many people these days expect to start out getting paid a real wage and full time work without coming up through the ranks.

It would be alright if the workers said I'm not sure. However, it isnt alright to give out information that could be harmful to your birds....its two different things.

It's such an old-school thought, so many old-timers fed all their animals nothing but scratch and corn. My husband and I looked after a farmer's pets once while they were on vacation. They fed the rabbits, goats, chickens, and geese nothing but corn and day old bread from the store.
