Hey guys! I'm Elissa! I'm 18 and just about to start my higher education in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology come January! I've had chickens in my life for a long time! I got our first flock from a former neighbor of ours, who gave us her older hens. I think I was about 6 or 7 at that time? Around that age, maybe even 8. Despite having grown up with chickens, my actual experience with informed, knowledgeable care is few.
This April, I was able to get 6 new chicks in addition to the 4 we had initially! Regretfully, two have passed on since then... As for the new batch, I have 3 red comets and 1 silkie! I love them to death. They follow me around and do that squatting thing when they view you as the rooster! I gave them all older-style names; the red comets are Daphne, Jezebel, and Clarice and the silkie is named Jolene! The older hens are harder to gauge breed-wise, since we had roosters before and they kept breeding. So the older ones are a big combo.
I also have a passion for the arts, despite a science major and chicken lover! Actually, now that I think about it...I might have to do some chicken-related art!
I found BackyardChickens forum because one of my most favorite hens, Daphne, recently got a staph infection on one of her toes! I had no idea what to do. So I of course googled it. This forum was a major help to me! So, I figured if I needed any more help with my birdies, or if I could lend an ear, I might as well!
So that's me! I'm so excited to join everyone!
