Young Canadian Goose with Fishing Line Around Neck and Beak

Thanks Cally and Lydia. The ducks and geese are what get me out of the house these days. Right now the goose family and duck family (2 mallard hens, 8 'lings between them) are sitting together on the grass under a shade tree, at the junction between two ponds. And within sight of my back door. I love seeing them.

The two duck hens behave now like a mom and pop for their combined brood. Some of us think they've modeled themselves after the geese. (This year's geese, the Mom and Dad are both *always* with the goslings).

UPDATE: ..... Buy a CAKE!!!

Was out about an hour ago, the ducks were waiting so put down water, food, then the geese came walking up over the hill.

Took them to a different tree with their own pan of water, put down food and observed them - together with the other woman in my complex they will allow close.

We could see no sign of the fishing line on any geese! There are six (humongous!) goslings, all are drinking and eating normally, no sign of the ligature mark on the neck that the one had been sporting the last few days. No fighting and thrashing around, no odd kink to a neck, every single one can bend their head and drink normally.

Hurray!!

I think with all the fighting the "caught up one" had been doing, he managed to loosen the loop. Maybe whatever was holding the two ends together - a knot? - kept shrinking and tightening but causing the total length to be longer. Maybe the ends even came completely apart. Til it finally dropped off his head!

Woohoo!

Because we can't control or police the fishermen who visit these ponds - not really - we may try to begin our own reconnaissance after this, scouting around after they've been here. I learned after speaking to one rehabilitation person that everyone must have a permit to fish anywhere, and the ponds where I live are decidedly private property. And there's a Conservation Police Hotline that can be used to report suspected offenders. So there's that possibility.

And all gosling were accounted for? that is awesome!! I know we live above a mountain river and have seen where fishing line got caught in a tree and is dangling over the river for some unsuspecting bird to get tangled into.
