Young children with roosters...is it a good idea?

This is a tough question. I am a large believer that children should be taught very young that the chickens are not playthings. You can't teach a rooster not to go on instinct but you can teach a child even if if they are very young.

I personally have 3 rooster, 2 Buff Orps and a Black Jersey Giant, as well as a very active 3 yr old. We have never had a issue with him and our Roos, even though they are as large as he is. They mostly just ignore him.

I think that is mosty due to the fact that Jake is never outside unsupervised and has been taught that we do not play with the chickens.
Instead they mostly see him as a food source, everyday he gives them their scratch and scraps, which I think helps cement that he is not a threat t them.

Now that being said I am not dumb enough to think that they might never hurt him, I just hope it never happens.

It's possible, you just have to teach your child to respect them.
