My young Buff Orpy is "squatting" once in while when she walks around. Does she maybe hav an egg growing in her and she is reacting to it or maybe squatting gor another reason.
She is 20 (almost 21 weeks) old.
Woud appreciate any advice.
Looking forward to our first egg !!!!

Squatting is a sign of sexual maturity. They "assume the position", squatting down so a "rooster" can mount them. They demonstrate this submissive posture for humans if they recognize you as the "rooster", often when there isn't the real thing in the flock. It is used as a sign that eggs will be forthcoming soon.

Everybody always beats me to these posts that I like to answer.

Exactly. This is what happens around this time of the year when they start laying again.

She's getting ready to lay soon! She should start getting in the nest box and fixing it up as well. Then one day soon you will find the prettiest egg ever and post it's picture on BYC!

Thanks Freds Hens...
I noticed your picture of what looks like a Plymoth Rock or Barred Rock.
I have one that looks like that with a big comb and big waddles.
Is that a hen or a roo??
Mine is "supposed" to be a hen.
Thanks for your reply.
I am too exited for our first egg !!!

whooot whoot !!

When I asked this same question, my favorite answer was, "that means your hen thinks you are a very handsome rooster." So now, when she does this, I just tell her I think she's very pretty too. And thank you for the eggs!
