I have a young silkie pullet (6 months) who seems to be sneezing all the time. She's been doing this for a couple of months. There is no eye or nasal discharge & no smell of sickness. Her appetite & poop are normal. I thought maybe is was a response to the fires locally & the ash in the air but it hasn't changed as the air quality has improved. None of the other chickens are doing this or show signs of any sickness. I am stumped. Any suggestions? Should I try VetRx on her comb & in her throat? Any thoughts on colloidal silver? Or should I go directly to antibiotics (Tylan or something else)? Thanks.

Chickens may sneeze because of environmental reasons, especially dust. So, it could be do to ash or something like getting a particle of feed stuck in her nostril. How do her nostrils look? Is there any dried mucus or food stuck?

As for a disease that causes sneezing, infectious bronchitis virus, is common in chickens. It causes frequent sneezing for about a month or so. But usually, IB affects most of the flock over a few weeks.

If you think you have a respiratory disease or have had one in the past in your flock, I’d suggest culling one or the sickest one and sending it off to get it tested. Most, if not all respiratory diseases in chickens is incurable and your birds will remain carriers of that disease for life and put others’ flocks in danger. I’d highly recommend culling all infected birds or keep a tight closed flock- no birds in and no birds leaving out of your property.
