I had a rooster that got really aggressive around 5 months old. After several more months he had learned who his allies were. He wouldn't attack me or any of the regulars that stop on through. However, when one of my more uncommon visitors came through the rooster would sometimes get aggressive towards them. After a year I didn't really have any concern about my rooster unless I was trying to handle a hen.
That being said I never had a young child around so that definitely adds a big factor to your decision. I have scars on my legs from a friend's rooster. Kids are a lot closer to the ground than adults. Seems risky. Good luck
