PLEASE HELP! I have a 6 1/2 month old buff silkie bantam-- brand new layer -- who is struggling to lay what I am almost sure is her first egg. She is spread flat with her hind end lifted up, breathing heavy, with a slight squeal in each breath.

I wrote in the forum about her yesterday because she was in the nest box all morning and when she got out after noon, there was only a bright yellow (yolk?) puddle on the straw. I was afraid an egg has broken inside of her, but there were no shells in the nest box, and she seemed fine yesterday afternoon, running around, eating and drinking normally. I carefully checked around her vent and felt around her abdomen and felt nothing amiss, saw no blood, although I am in no way an expert. (This is my first flock.)

Today, however, she seems to be struggling and in pain for the past 4-5 hours. Help! What should I do?

Sorry for the panic post, but I couldn't figure out how to delete it. Buttercup finally laid a (quite large) egg this afternoon for as small as she is! I think this was her first egg after the yolk episode yesterday. Thankfully, all is well. Appreciate all who replied to my posts yesterday. I'm still new at this egg-laying business and am extremely grateful for the expertise on this forum.
