I have been reading over the disease post on here and have come to a conclusion- it is inevitable your chickens will get sick.

If you have your chickens outside in runs or free range they will come in contact with wild birds and boom there sick.

You buy hatching eggs - some illnesses are passed this way.

You buy a new bird and quarantine it or you buy a starter flock- these birds could have CRD or something similar in the past and now there carriers.

I just got done reading " The Chicken Health Hanbook" as well as post on here and this is the only conclusion I can find-

Your chickens are going to get sick!!

I wish there wasn't so much Chicken Little thinking on this forum. They get sick & get better, right?

Of course, everyone and everything gets sick at some point. But every illness and injury is an opportunity to learn and become a better chicken-mom (or dad).

You just gotta look at the glass being half-full.

Now excuse me while i go outside to see why all my chickens are screaming at the top of their lungs. Must be another enthusiastic egg announcement.

Oh my God, the first time I read the Chicken Health Handbook I thought I was going to be sick. It was actually a totally overwhelming, depressing read for a new chicken owner.

Now, though, I find I refer to that book again and again. It is the most comprehensive book I have found on chicken disease.

That said, I have found birds to be more susceptible to illness than any other animal I have ever had. Can't disagree with you there, SportTees!

I also figure that the more I learn about chickens, the better I get at maintaining them in a way that helps keep them healthy. I hope to actually be good at this hobby by the time I leave this earth, LOL!

Hang in there!

P.S. - - Oh, and if you keep re-reading the CHH it does get less depressing.

Not if they are wild! These are a hardy bunch of birds that I got from a wild hen and wild rooster. My only problem is Mama wants to go broody ALL THE TIME!
