Your dead chick might not be dead!

Similar thing happened to me. We got our chicks from Ideal three weeks ago. One was DOA and a second appeared dead. It was the only mottled houdan I had ordered. He was in the bottom of the box, had been trampled by the other chicks, was cold, eyes closed. The only sign of life was the occasional gasp for air. If not for the gasp, I would have thought he had been dead for some time. I took him out and kept him cupped in my hads for several minutes. Eventually, he showed some movements. His eyes opened up a little. Finally, he started to try and stand. Suddenly, he went completely limp. I could turn him over and his head would just flop around. I thought the effort of trying to survive was just too much, and he finally died. But, a few seconds later and he showed movement again.

I worked with him most of the day. Eventually, he was able to eat and drink. His balance was off, and if knocked over he couldn't get back up. He is three weeks old today. To watch him now, you would never know that anything was ever wrong with him.

I think he'll do fine, even if he is a little mentally challenged

We had a black and white cat that my wife inherited when her grandparents passed. It finally died of old age about a year ago. Her name was Miracle. Since the chick is also black and white, we thought "Miracle" would be fitting for him too.

Phoenix is perfect!

A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. It is said that the bird's cry is that of a beautiful song. In very few stories they are able to change into humans.

All of the stories are wonderful..thanks so much for taking time to share those with me. The name is crazy, but I like them all so much that I just combined them into one - Phoenix MashLazarus - sounds kind of melodic, don't you think.

I just read the story. THAT IS SO ME!!!! I would defidentally do something like that! I will defidentally keep that in mind when I get chicks! you have given me hope! lol

Fluffy Chick 15 - you won't be sorry about the Silkies - they are absolutely wonderful little birds. I am very protective of mine - they are like little children even when they are fully grown. Out of all the things in the world that I could get really freaked-out about, if something happened to one of my little Silkies, that would really do me in. I have 7 of them - two little roosters and 5 hens. One of the little hens is the offspring of a black Silkie hen and a blue Silkie rooster..she's not very old and she is the shiniest black with the faintest of jade green in her tail feathers - that really look like thin little curly ribbons. And she is a little taller than the mother OR the father...a beauty. You will love them.

edited to correct a misspelled word - the tense

I love good stories and all.... but am I the only one wondering why you live with your "X-husband". Isn't that the whole idea of an X that you don't live with them anymore. If you do then all the more power to you, but was curious none the less.

Has any body seen the documentary type movie, The Natural History of the Chicken? Well, one story in the movie was about a lady who found her hen frozen solid under the porch

, and nursed it back to health in like a baby crib in her house. AMAZING!
