I'm thinking of starting a mealworm colony to get my chickens through those short winter days when there's less time for foraging. I'm already aware of the how-to, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-mealworms, but I don't see any information about whether or not there is a smell involved in this endeavor. I'd be doing it in my (small) apartment. I own my own business and frequently entertain clients at home, so I really can't have any stench whatsoever. Is this feasible?

Also, aside from the smell: The process is supposedly simple, but after reading the how-to, in my opinion it seems rather time-consuming. Is this really worth it for a flock of eight or fewer hens? What has your experience been?

Does not smell bad at all, not time consuming I just put them in a 3 drawer plastic organizer and thats it, you can keep it simple or make it as complicted as you want.

If you do not give them enough ventilation, it will stink. Some cover the tops of the containers and only put small vent holes in. This will make it stink. With an open top or a top that is all wire or screening, it won't smell at all.
