Your experiences with Japanese (standard & bantam)

I wish you were closer too! If you ever come into NC, let me know & I would be willing to meet you:)

I thought maybe the Japanese were just prone to more problems b/c the other breeds that came from ideal are thriving....

Wow, I have never heard of a hatchery not shipping to a certain part of the country. I have to admit, my first thought was that they were putting you off but why do that? They just lose business. Weird.

Yeah, if only, but we are literally HOURS apart. You know, I have only had these Japanese bantams since early spring and we have had such success with them, like I said, you must have had a batch that were sickly...I am a bit surprised that you were told by your extension agent that this breed is not very hardy. You would not think the climate would be a lot different there in NC than here in middle Tennessee. I have never gotten any eggs or chicks from a mail order company; just got them all local. I think that must be the best way to do it if at all possible. Put an ad out for yourself, here and on other sites, telling folks what you are looking for. You might be surprised to find that what you want is right under your nose there at home!

Oh, and I love your login, we love Jeeps here at our house, we have had 5 within the last few years and still have 3 that we use on a daily basis!!

I wasn't familiar with your city in TN, but I know that it can be a LOOOONNNG drive;) But if you do ever come to NC keep me in mind... especially since the chicks you have are doing so well.

I haven't had much luck finding Japanese locally & we have asked on our local poultry yahoo group & asked local breeders if they know of anyone.

Thank you for the compliment:) I love jeeps too! When I was little my grandfather would take me for a ride in his "bouncy jeep" & he would say "beep beep in a jeep" to me. I doubt I get another jeep after mine wears out... wonder if I can still keep the SN. I have a jeep, my mom has a jeep, my sister has a jeep, my dad has a jeep, my MIL has a jeep, my grandparents have a jeep, and my uncle has a jeep. It looks like a jeep lot at family gatherings:)

Try posting on craigslist. You would not believe the response that I have received to my posts there for all my variety of chicks for sale. I had my golden pheasants sold within a day of posting, and someone is coming out Friday evening to buy my Crele Old English bantam chicks and someone else is coming up to look at and possibly purchase my pea chicks!! It works!!!

I am sure it could work if you posted a Wanted ad under the farm/livestock/garden heading...
